OUR SERVICES

Advocacy/Legal Services:

This includes all individual and systems advocacy the agency provides.  Individual advocacy includes assisting consumer with obtaining reasonable accommodation in the workplace, reasonable modification in their homes and physical and programmatic access to locations in the community.  Also included are concerted efforts to change public policy as it relates to services for PWD.  A significant amount of the Center advocacy resources are used for issues surrounding the education of children with disabilities in the ‘least restrictive environment.’

Architectural Barrier Services:

As part of our Business Membership at SILO we provide our members a site visit that outlines any glaring problems with access.  Additionally, as a fee for service program, SILO offers comprehensive site assessments for physical and programmatic accessibility.

Assistive Devices/Equipment:

This agency provides information on the board range of assistive technology available to consumer as well as possible funding options.  Referrals are provided for AT assessments and securing the needed devices.

Communication Services:

In addition to providing sign language interpreters for all consumers/visitors that need them, SILO also provides referrals to businesses, organizations and agencies in need of the services.  Additionally, SILO prepares its distribution materials in Spanish, Braille, large print and audio cassette.

Housing or Shelter Services:

SILO provides information, advice, and assistance related to securing and/or retaining housing or shelter, including existing accessible housing. Our services include assistance with reviewing and evaluating newspaper ads, advice on communication with landlords, provision of lists of available accessible housing and housing support application information and assistance. SILO also works with consumers to find creative solutions to their housing situation (shared residency, barter for rent, etc.)

Information and Referral (I&R) Services:

SILO devotes much time ensuring that members of the community have the information and referrals they need.  SILO provides information on available resources in the community, good, services and other resources leading to independence of people with disabilities.  SILO is committed to providing appropriate referrals to consumers.

Independent Living Skills Development and Life Skills Services:

independent living skills development is instruction to develop independent living skills in areas such as personal care, coping skills, use of assistive technology, financial management, social skills, and household management, including education and training necessary for living in the community and participating in community activities.

Mobility/Social Skills Training:

SILO provides mobility training for people with all disabilities in the form of trips on local transportation, navigating in a wheelchair and other issues important to individuals with disabilities.

Peer Counseling (including cross-disability peer counseling):

Only another person with a disability can really understand the disability perspective.  Peer counseling allows individuals with disabilities to speak candidly to another person with a disability.  It breeds a certain equality that enables the individual to have greater success in becoming more independent.  Peer counseling occurs between individuals in and in a group setting.

Recreational Services:

SILO works with individuals with disabilities to help them access recreational aspects of the community.

Transportation Services:

While SILO does not provide transportation at this time, we are vastly familiar with all aspects of transportation in our community.  We provide consumers info on fixed route and paratransit, vehicle modifications and other issues as they relate to transportation.

Youth Services:

SILO spends a significant portion of time working with students with disabilities to ensure they are being educated in the ‘least restrictive environment.’  By providing peer counseling in schools, support during IEP meetings and educating parents, students and educators, SILO provide students with disabilities a greater chance at success.

Vocational and Pre-Vocational Services:

Peer Employment Counseling is the cornerstone of our vocational services program.  Information on reasonable accommodations in the workplace is provided to individuals and businesses in the community in order to create a better understanding of important issues.  SILO assists with resume writing, interviewing skills and other topics important to the job seeker with a disability.

Business/Industry/Agency Services:

Provide services not specified elsewhere in this list provided to businesses, industries and agencies, i.e. assistance to four individuals at ABC business that receive assistance in resolving a dispute over a specific discriminatory practice. The number of individuals at the business is counted here and the business served is counted in section III. Total People Served During year, H. Business/Agencies Served.

Benefits Advisement:

Benefit assistance is provided during the application process to obtain economic benefits. The broad scope of state and federal entitlement and other benefits are discussed with consumers in order that they are better informed of the availability of programs that help lead to independence.

Voter Registration:

All consumers are asked whether or not they are registered to vote.  If they are not we urge them about the importance of voting and we assist with the voting application process.
